The 2RS suffix is a sealing choice, not a cage choice. Two rubber seals lose a little peak speed compared to shielded designs, but they keep contamination out far better. In agricultural pumps the 2RS design is almost always the right call because the media (water, fertilizer suspension, occasional silt) is the contaminant that kills bearings fastest. 5 Spec Checks Before You Order 6204 2RS or 6206 ZZ for an Agricultural Pump
- Cage material code in the part number, not just in the salesperson’s email. Brass is usually suffixed ‘M’; pressed steel is sometimes unmarked; polyamide is usually ‘P’ or ‘TN’. If the suffix is absent, the cage material is unverified – request it be added to the test certificate.
- Seal code matches the duty environment. 2RS rubber seals for pumps exposed to water and fertilizer suspension; ZZ shields acceptable for dry gearbox compartments only. If the application is wet and the spec reads “6204 ZZ,” that is the wrong bearing.
- Lubrication specification matches pump orientation. Horizontal pumps with oil-mist are different from vertical pumps with grease; polyamide cages in particular need grease that is chemically compatible with the polymer.
